Septic Systems Impact In Our Communities

June 26, 2019 @ 9:30AM — 3:00PM Eastern Time (US & Canada)

Proper management and treatment of sanitary waters is important for the protection of the environment and public health. Not providing treatment to these wastes, or partially doing it, can affect our community. Direct contact with untreated sanitary waters can cause disease and spread to a larger population if they come into contact with water resources. Septic systems are a treatment option and are regulated by federal and territory laws and regulations.

This training is community-oriented, and the objective is to provide a summary of the impact of septic system in our daily life, basic concepts of this treatment process, types of septic systems, building codes, laws and regulations, and typical operation and maintenance. We should not forget that after the Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, many communities and beaches in USVI were affected by biological contamination. Main contamination source was defective septic systems and/or untreated discharges. In addition, “USEPA Caribbean Septic Systems Workgroup Initiative” will be discussed.

This training is funded by USEPA
